I'm jumping on a plane in the morning for Amarillo. Our tribe (the BGCT) is having a meeting and I am attending. I get to hang with some guys I like for a couple of days - which could be fun. Rick Warren is also slated to speak and I'm looking forward to that... NOT looking forward to the ballets so much.
...but Amarillo?? ...nothing against dirt and cows, but again I ask, Amarillo??
I think this years convention was good news for the BGCT. To only miss electing a president that says he wants to cooperate with the SBC by 40 votes. . . WOW! People have long thought these kind of numbers to be impossible to attain at the BGCT meetings. More people will show up next year if a similar candidate is run. Texas Baptists now have hope. . . they can change things by attending the convention. What a difference a real choice makes.
I have long believed that the minority was controling the majority in Texas. The BGCT 2007 annual meeting has proved my hunch right. This years convention was anything but a victory for the status quo. I believe things have just begun to get interesting in Texas.
Lastly, there is no doubt the BGCT needs change. No one could have done a worse job managing mission funds over the past two years. I pray that there is an even bigger showing at next years convention, and perhaps then competant, Bible believing people will be elected.

James,
For what it's worth... I do agree that the meeting was interesting for similar reasons as you. I do not, however, agree with a couple things you said. First, managing missions funds in a very large, complicated organization is not easy. I agree that funds were used poorly with little oversight, but I believe it to be an honest mistake and not one of malice. I also think they are working hard to correct the problems and not repeat them. Second, I believe tht the past leadership of the BGCT were "Bible Believeing" folks... Why is it that whenever two christians disagree we have to end up pointing a finger and saying, "You don't believe the right way, so you don't believe in the Bible." I haven't always agreed with their politics (nor do I with anyones) but I still respect them as fellow believers.
...since it's my blog, I thought I might need to give my two cents in response...
